Resumo

The objective was to analyze the fluctuations in the concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) that affect air quality in the city of Arequipa, Peru, during the period 2010-2021. The research was of an applied type, with a descriptive, correlational approach, non-experimental and longitudinal design. 2,512 records of PM10 concentrations from five monitoring stations were analyzed. It was found that the monthly variation of PM10 increases from the months of July (103.24 μg/m3) to November (108.91 μg/m3), with El Filtro being the station with the highest concentration (141.28 μg/m3); At the seasonal level, a higher concentration is found in winter (104.87 μg/m3) and spring (108.63 μg/m3); At an annual level, the highest value occurs in 2013 (124.92 μg/m3). The historical behavior of PM10 shows a slight downward trend in almost all stations. There is a negative correlation with precipitation and relative humidity. The air quality status is moderate (70.22%), good (18.15%), and unhealthy for sensitive groups (10.59%). Likewise, the percentage of annual exceedance was 86.43% with respect to the ECA (Environmental Quality Standard) (50 μg/m3) and 99.48% of the GCA (Air Quality Guidelines) (15 µg/m3). It is concluded that the air quality in the five districts of Arequipa is impacted by high levels of PM10, which exceed the standards established by Peruvian and international regulations. It is suggested to implement appropriate environmental management policies in order to improve air quality conditions.
